Music Therapy Group Sessions at TMS (2016-2017)

Multi-sensory musical, movement or ensemble sessions are tailored to the ages or abilities of group members. Sessions are fun, engaging and structured to give participants opportunities to learn and practice social and communication skills. No previous music therapy experience is required. For younger children or individuals with limited language, objectives may include developing responses such as remaining with the group, increasing attention to peers, sharing and/or turn-taking. Older clients may address skills such as group decision-making, problem solving, negotiation and on-topic conversation. Parents with small children may enjoy creative quality time with their young child while addressing important social, speech and language, motor, play and/or cognitive developmental goals! Parents, caregivers or nannies participate as active partners and may receive coaching in music experiences for home use. Music Therapy: ARTS N PLAY (2016-2017)

ARTS N PLAY, co-led by an Early Childhood teacher and a Board Certified Music Therapist, of­fers group play experiences designed to provide developmen­tally appropriate opportunities to strengthen behavioral, social and communication skills. The curricu­lum is also designed to develop and support concepts in a classroom setting. The program's unique music therapy component rein­forces the curriculum and skills. Criteria for acceptance include identification of a special need, provision of an IEP or professional evaluation(s), and completion of an initial assessment with our staff. Admission takes place throughout the year. Children with special needs will have opportunities to bridge with peers who are typically develop­ing. Returning students can regis­ter online. Music Therapy: Musical Revue (2016-2017)

Teens and adults with special needs will have a unique opportunity to interact and learn new skills with peers in a rich musical experience adapted to individual need. The curriculum includes basic musical performance skills, such as singing, dancing, experiential warm-ups, musical vocabulary, dramatic expression, and stage presence. A musical "revue" format will be utilized, with therapeutic emphasis on social communication skills, conceptual skills related to abstract thinking, attending to group tasks, and following directions. Group acceptance /placement will be at the discretion of the Center. An assessment for clients new to The Music Settlement is required prior to registration. Music Therapy: Saturday Jam (2016-2017)

This monthly recreational music therapy group provides an opportunity for adults (ages 18 and up) with special needs to enjoy fun, group-oriented musical experiences with their peers in a welcoming and nurturing environment. Experiences will be adapted for the skills, strengths, and needs of the participants. Drum circles, movement experiences, musical games, and group song writing are just some of the activities planned for the Saturday Jam recreational music therapy group.
