Grammy-winning saxophonist, Joe Lovano, Giving Back

A Grammy-winning saxophonist, composer, and producer, Lovano is known for his fearless pursuit of new artistic expression. With a Grammy win for 52nd Street Themes and 14 other nominations, he has earned countless accolades from DownBeat Magazine, including Tenor Saxophonist, Musician of the Year, Jazz Album of the Year, and multiple Triple Crowns. He’s also been honored by JazzTimes and the Jazz Journalists Association.

Born and raised in Cleveland, Lovano graduated from Euclid High School before attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he later received an Honorary Doctorate. Since 2001, he has held the Gary Burton Chair in Jazz Performance and, since 2009, has served as a founding faculty member of Berklee’s Global Jazz Institute, directed by Danilo Pérez.

Lovano is establishing The Tony "Big T" Lovano Cleveland Jazz Legacy Scholarship, an endowed fund in memory of his father to support merit-based scholarships for students in the “J@MS” (Jazz at The Music Settlement) program. J@MS trains young musicians in theory, history, and musicianship while giving them the opportunity to perform in dynamic big bands and small combos at Cleveland’s 113-year old nonprofit music school. Through its Center for Music, The Music Settlement provides accessible, life-enhancing music and arts experiences to people of all ages and abilities. Lovano’s endowment will help expand this mission and support students who might not otherwise have the opportunity to participate.

All ticket sales from the September 21, 2025 Tribute Concert will support the establishment of this scholarship fund, to benefit jazz students at The Music Settlement. If you wish to donate to support this scholarship, donations may be made here (Please indicate that your donation is in support of the Lovano scholarship).
