Umfundalai (mah-FOON-dah-lah) means "essence" or "essential" in Kiswahili.
Umfundalai infuses and expands the theory and practice of contemporary African dance, incorporating steps, rhythm, and sensibility from a range of African dance traditions. Like ballet and modern dance, classes include a focus on named movements, structure, and basic history.
Each class will include a warm-up, across-the-floor, and center work, just like a ballet or modern dance class, but all the exercises are imbued with Pan-African movement, music, and understanding. No dance experience is necessary.
