Joseph H. Miller is one of the most asked-for trumpet players in Northeast Ohio. His big sound, joyful approach, and high-energy solo work can be heard from Playhouse Square to the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra and many places in between.
Joe is currently the Principal Trumpet at Playhouse Square, second chair/split lead and soloist with the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, and performs locally and regionally with his own group and several jazz, salsa, and funk groups. He has performed for many internationally touring Broadway shows, as well as dozens of solo artists including Aretha Franklin, Tony Bennett, Tony Vega, La India, Johnny Mathis, Frankie Valli, and more. He toured internationally with the Acid Jazz group, Liquid Soul, and with Bobby Caldwell. Joe’s recording credits are also many and varied, including a Grammy-nominated recording with Doug Johns; the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra; The Jack Schantz Jazz Unit; Paul Ferguson’s Jazz Orchestra; Sammy Deleon; the late Gerald Levert; and many more.
Joe has been a member of the Music Faculty at Cleveland State University since 2011, specializing in Jazz and Commercial music, and has been with The Music Settlement since 2017. He has been teaching trumpet in and around Cleveland for more than 25 years. In that time, he has been a resident coach and artist with many schools in the area, and has built a reputation for helping students with sound, range, and technique. Joe is a proud Cleveland State University alum and former (and forever) student of Charles Couch (Cleveland Orchestra, retired) and jazz great Kenny Davis.
