James May is a native Clevelander and Music Director/Bandleader for a 21-piece not-for-profit community jazz/praise big band, called Gabriel’s Horns. Members include professional and amateur musicians, music educators, college students and talented youth. The band has a rich history of local performances including Severance Hall MLK Jr. Concert, Cleveland State University’s Essentially Ellington Jazz Festival, Cleveland Ingenuity Festivals, Cleveland Art Museum, The House of Blues, The Bop Stop, Cleveland’s Tall Ship Festival, Cuyahoga County Fair, Worship Centers, Assisted Living Facilities and Trinity Cathedral Brown Bag Noon Concert Series. Gabriel’s Horns considers the mentoring of young musicians an integral part of its mission.

Gabriel’s Horns has featured local and world renowned jazz artists and vocalists, such as Eddie Baccus Sr., Ron Davis, Maria Jacobs, Evelyn Wright, Sabra Dodge, gospel singer Kelly Chapman, Gospel Group Chairo! Praise, pianists Jackie Warren, Saxophonists Eddie Baccus Jr., Bobby Selvaggio, Chris Coles, Jim Noel, Nathan Davis, Johnny Cochran, trumpeters Dennis Reynolds, Theresa May, Mark Russo, Melvin Burkes, Joe Trczinski, Doug James, Bassists Jesse Dandy Jr., Glenn Holmes, percussionist Bill Ransom, Ralph Jackson, Neil Chastain, and trombonists Dick Wooley and Chris Anderson.

Mr. May has over 20 years of big band and brass banding experience. He received his formal music/trumpet training from Cleveland State University and brass banding, conducting from world renowned Salvation Army Bandmasters and Composers such as Dr. Keith Wilkinson, Dr. Ronald Holz, Dr. Anita Hunt and Dr. William Himes. He was solo cornetist and Deputy Bandmaster in The Salvation Army Northeast Ohio Brass Band. In addition, Mr. May is a bass/baritone vocalist in The Martin Luther King Jr. Mass Choir, which performs yearly at Severance Hall.
