Clinical Music Therapist, Clinic/Center and Community Based Services

Position Title: Part time Clinical Music Therapist, assignments for both Clinic/Center Based Services and community locations

Reports to: Chair, Center for Music Therapy

Primary purpose:

The Clinical Music Therapist advances and supports the mission of The Cleveland Music School Settlement (The Music Settlement) through planning and conducting evidence-based music therapy services for children and adults with disabilities, behavioral health or medical diagnoses, and/or who might be otherwise underserved at The Music Settlement and community locations.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

Direct Service

  • Conduct individualized music therapy assessments to determine clients' needs and goals.
  • Develop and implement personalized music therapy treatment plans and programming following Music Settlement and agency-specific standards, goals and expectations
  • Utilize improvisation, songwriting, and other music-based interventions to address therapeutic goals.
  • Communicate and collaborate with other treating professionals, including teachers or healthcare professionals, to integrate music therapy into comprehensive care plans where applicable.
  • Evaluate and document clients' progress, adjusting treatment plans as necessary.
  • Demonstrate musicality, creativity, and musical knowledge in design and implementation of sessions on a wide range of instruments and styles.
  • Design and apply creative solutions to challenges that arise in therapy, resulting in appropriate and effective therapeutic plans in a timely fashion.
  • Willingness to accept assignments as requested by leadership
  • Attend and participate in regularly occurring and scheduled CMT events, such as Client gatherings or department meetings

Professional development and Engagement

  • Demonstrate active involvement in programming and center development.
  • Works cooperatively with supervisors to address challenges and improve outcomes.
  • Initiate and/or maintain contact with other professionals, family members, agencies, and colleagues who are supporting your clients, as required by assignment.
  • Demonstrate positive consideration of individual job performance feedback received, and in response to supervision, flexibility. Incorporate the coaching directions provided to improve processes and quality of services provided to clients.
  • Adapt well to shifting priorities and demonstrate flexibility as needed in response to changes in organizational or client needs or schedules.
  • Follow Policies and Procedures guidelines of The Music Settlement and its Center for Music Therapy.
  • Adhere to the Standards of Clinical Practice and the Code of Ethics of the American Music Therapy Association and the Code of Professional Practice of the Certification Board for Music Therapists.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge and understanding of best practices and new approaches, through reading, learning, engaging in continuing education and professional gatherings and networks.
  • Manage time effectively and efficiently.
  • Maintain files, work and office areas in orderly manner.
  • Administration
    • Act as on-site coordinator of music therapy services when assigned to agency.
    • Maintain regular and timely communication with Music Settlement supervisor and agency coordinator, providing current information in areas which fall within jurisdiction of each position.
    • Inform Music Settlement supervisor and secure required agency approval prior to making professional presentations, writing for publications, or being interviewed concerning execution of professional responsibilities.
    • Be knowledgeable concerning and follow agency-specific policies related to the workplace.
    • Manage and maintain music therapy equipment and resources.
    • Supervise other staff members, interns, students or volunteers as assigned.
    • Provide support and training to interns or new music therapists.
  • Research
    • Participate in Center research and evaluation activities as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Music Therapy or Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field with

Equivalency Degree in Music Therapy from accredited program

  • Minimum of two years’ professional experience as a music therapist
  • Music Therapist-Board-Certified (MT-BC)
  • State of Ohio Licensed Music Therapist (LPMT)
  • Experience working with diverse populations and age groups.
  • Proficiency in multiple musical instruments.
  • Strong collaborative and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Compassionate and empathetic approach to client care.
  • A have valid driver’s license and reliable form of transportation to travel to client sites.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 25 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Music Therapy or a related field.
  • Experience as a Music Therapist with supervision of other students, interns, or professionals.
  • Experience as a Music Therapist in Behavioral Health settings.
  • Additional years of experience in varied music therapy settings.

Current Vacancy Position Status: Part-time, hourly

Pay Range: $21-$23 an hour, commensurate with experience and desired competencies and skills.
