by Leen Akran
I am currently in my twelfth year of piano lessons at The Music Settlement, and each year I have seen myself grow musically. This summer, I entered my performance of Claude Debussy’s First Arabesque into The Stars of Summer International Piano and Vocal Competition and received a first place (95 points) in the World Composers Category ages 15-17. This fall, I have already learned and memorized Gershwin’s Prelude No. 2 and performed it in a masterclass with Dr. Jeff Brown, the new Chair of the Center for Music at The Music Settlement. I am also preparing the Brahms Rhapsody in G minor Op. 79, No. 2 and the second movement of Ravel’s Concerto in G Major for the NFMC Festival in March.
These accomplishments and my deep love for the piano wouldn’t have been possible without The Music Settlement, and for that I am extremely grateful.
We all need stories that move us. To help others recall their own stories and inspire them to share those stories. We need stories to invite others into our community of people transformed by the power of music. What is your music story? How has music changed you?
