Material will be drawn from folk, Celtic, and Renaissance music. Students may sign out harps for practice at the University Circle campus by appointment.

If this is your first enrollment of the school year in the Center for Music (September – June), a non-refundable registration fee is due at the time of enrollment ($35 for a single registrant, with a cap of $50 per family).

Stephan Haluska is a harpist, composer, arranger, and improviser whose music spans from classical and traditional, to jazz, pop, and experimental. Stephan attempts to expand the harp beyond its preconceived notions and stereotypes, creating new roles and opportunities for the instrument. He examines the harp’s unique textural, harmonic, and percussive qualities. He focuses on including non-traditional harp techniques, adding preparations and tools, and explores harp sounds only possible through the use of electronic effects pedals and computer processing.

Stephan holds an MFA in Harp Performance with a concentration in Improvisation from Mills College in Oakland, CA where he studied with Zeena Parkins, Roscoe Mitchell, Fred Frith, and Karen Gottlieb. Stephan received his BA in Music Theory and Composition from Bowling Green State University where he studied with Mikel Kuehn, Elainie Lillios, and Chris Dietz. Stephan grew up in the Cleveland area where studied harp with longtime TMS harp teacher, Jocelyn Chang. Stephan releases original music for solo harp and with collaborative groups under his own name.

Stephan has been with The Music Settlement since 2017 where he teaches private harp students, group harp outreach classes, and group Suzuki music theory. He performs as a soloist and collaborator at venues around the Cleveland area, including several performances at BOP STOP at The Music Settlement.
