Reginald L. Bowens, a Cleveland, OH native was born into a loving and musical family. Both of his parents, who are also musicians, always encouraged him to live up to his fullest potential, especially concerning music. As a result, Reginald grew up singing in many church choirs and eventually started picking up instruments like the piano, trombone and flute, to play in church and in school bands. Having these talents helped him to get through his high school years at Cleveland School of the Arts and more recently, through his undergraduate career at Washington, DC’s Howard University.
The Howard experience equipped Reginald to be able to work with some of the nation’s most iconic musicians during and after college. Some of these artists include: Jon Hendricks, Bobby McFerrin, Smokey Robinson, Dr. Billy Taylor, David Baker, Geri Allen, Grady Tate, Janis Siegel, Ben Vereen, The New York Voices, Kim Burrell, Shirley Caesar, Kurt Carr, Geoffrey Golden, Marvin Hamlisch, Ben Folds, Sara Bareilles, Shawn Stockman and Nick Lachey to name a few. Reginald’s experiences have also taken him to venues around the globe including Bermuda, Slovakia, Canada, Denmark, Sweden, Jamaica, and Italy.
After completion of his bachelor of music degree program in 2011, Reginald and Afro Blue, Howard University’s premier vocal jazz ensemble competed in NBC’s hit acappella TV show “The Sing-Off, in which the group placed fourth out of sixteen acappella groups from across the globe. Later that year, Reginald returned to Cleveland and became a faculty member at The Music Settlement – a community music school – where he served in many capacities to help further music education in the Cleveland community, especially with teenagers and young men from age nine and up.
Reginald is currently a master’s student in the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University where he’s majoring in jazz studies with a focus in voice. He recently received a student music award in the category of “Best Jazz Arrangement” by DownBeat Magazine, and was nominated for a Performer’s Certificate at the Jacobs school for a high caliber of musicianship expressed at his master’s recital in November 2014. This nomination is the highest honor given to select students at the Jacobs school. Reginald does not know what the future holds, but through his faith and genuine love of the art, he plans to actualize his destiny.
