We welcome you to join us for an evening of jazz standards and originals with Glenn's quartet featuring Paul Samuels on drums, Drene Ivy on piano, and Johnny Cochran on Sax.
Glenn Holmes is a native Cleveland jazz bass player who earned degrees in String Bass & Music Theory from Miami University (Ohio) and a Master of Music degree in Theory/Composition from Wichita State University.He has performed as a guest soloist in both the classical and jazz idioms. Glenn is a former member of the Wichita Symphony Orchestra, served on the faculty of Wichita State University and Friends University and is a published composer. Past performances have included associations with Ignacio Berroa, Charlie Rouse, Andy Narell, Jerry Halen, Richie Cole, Doc Cheatham, Keith Copeland, Eddie Daniels, Joe Williams, Jimmie Heath, Benny Bailey, Clark Terry, and Cindy Blackman, to name only a few. As a freelance musician, he is works with the Eric Gould Trio, the Bill Ransom Quintet, the MKE Ensemble and the Jazz Heritage Orchestra.
Paul Samuels grew up in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. His father, a violinist with the Cleveland Orchestra, and his mother, who designs and creates visual art, was supportive of Samuels’ interest in playing music. As a teenager, his father took him to concerts featuring McCoy Tyner, Tony Williams, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, and Sarah Vaughn. These jazz innovators inspired the young Samuels to become a performing artist and drummer. Samuels has recorded, performed, and or toured internationally with a variety of musicians: James Moody, David Fathead Newman, Lonnie Plaxico, Hank Crawford, Pat “The Kid” Martino, Jack McDuff, and the now deceased popular rhythm and blues artist Gerald Levert.
Drene Ivy began playing the piano at the age of 4 and began formal training in piano at the age of 5; by the age of 8, he was skillfully playing classical compositions by Beethoven. He studied piano techniques and theory at the Cleveland Music School Settlement and studied classical music at the Cleveland Institute of Music. Drene Ivy was an instructor of jazz composition and techniques and piano theory for the Houston Board of Education as well as instructor of Jazz History at Cleveland State University. Since 2004, Drene Ivy has appeared as guest clinician at the famed Edwin Hawkins & Walter Hawkins Music & Arts Seminar where he served as staff clinician teaching keyboarding performance. Since 2004, Drene Ivy has appeared as guest clinician at the famed Edwin Hawkins Music & Arts Seminar where he serves as staff clinician teaching Piano. In 2009 Lift The Savior Up written by Drene Ivy was recorded with the Music & Arts Seminar choir. Drene has also played with Grammy Award Saxophonist Kirk Whalum and many others.
A native of Cleveland's southwest side, saxophonist Johnny Cochran was a music lover at an early age. Through his music, he aims to share his life story growing up in Cleveland. As a child Johnny was active in gospel music playing drums in church and singing in the choir. Later, he started playing saxophone in elementary school, which opened the door for learning about jazz. He attended Cleveland School of the Arts and Cuyahoga Community College simultaneously during high school, studying saxophone with the legendry Ernie Krivda and finding mentorship in many other local Cleveland players. While furthing his training at the Oberlin Conservatory, he has remained an active professional performing in the Cleveland area with bands such as, Mojo: The Generations Big Band, The Jazz Heritage Orchestra, Erine Krivda's Fat Tuesday Big Band, and The Swing City Big Band. He has had the opportunity to perform with world-renowned artists such as Clark Terry, Jimmy Heath, Sean Jones, and many others. He is also currently a member of the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Ohio native, Sean Jones. Johnny studied with Gary Bartz at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and graduated in May of 2013.
