Secret Keeper (Stephan Crump/Mary Halvorson) @ BOP STOP

Secret Keeper (Stephan Crump/Mary Halvorson) @ BOP STOP

Secret Keeper’s unique take on chamber jazz will appeal to fans of Jim Hall, Bill Frisell, or Jimmy Giuffre. This duo is made up of two of the most innovative players and composers on the New York jazz scene, Mary Halvorson and Stephan Crump.

Halvorson is a major new voice in jazz guitar and her quintet gave one of standout performances at the 2013 Newport Jazz Fest. She has been featured in the New York Times, JazzTimes, and DownBeat – which described her as “…a genuinely exciting face in the creative music scene…[her] writing has great range and originality, and [her] precise, hardscrabble guitar playing is just plain bad-ass.” Stephan Crump is a great, classically trained bassist who plays with contemporary giants like Vijay Iyer and Steve Lehman. Also an excellent composer, he leads Rosetta Trio, which DownBeat says “…cuts to the core of jazz fundamentals – the art of communication and the shared possibilities that come from arrangements that are stripped of excess.”

Secret Keeper formed in 2011 and their first recording together, Super Eight, was a collection of improvisations. Their brand new release, Emerge, showcases their compositions and the exceptional rapport they have built. It is amazing how much energy and beauty they can conjure with just guitar and bass. Critics are already noticing this great record:

“Their rapport and shared intuition seemed present from the outset of their partnership, but the new record, which features them moving effortlessly from structured passages to wide-open excursions, is even richer and more satisfying. The tunes burrow deeper into my memory with each pass, but it’s the way Halvorson and Crump dance together in those melodies that really knocks me out. That sort of connection can’t be faked.”

– The Chicago Reader

“Emerge is as diverse as it is enjoyable. Such loose but precise music is difficult to execute well and the fact that the compositions are also uniformly excellent simply adds to the disc’s overall effect.”

–NYC Jazz Record

We hope you can join us for this evening of startlingly beautiful music.
