Thoth Trio @ BOP STOP

Thoth Trio:
- Ben Opie: saxophones, clarinet
- Paul Thompson: upright bass
- David Throckmorton: drums
Labelled as "intense acoustic jazz", Thoth Trio plays largely original works and lesser-played compositions by composers such as Thelonious Monk, Ornette Coleman, Billy Strayhorn, and Sam Rivers. The players in Thoth Trio are at the center of a creative music scene in Pittsburgh, PA. All three have additionally participated in OPEK (Sun Ra-inspired big band), Flexure (electric improvisation and modular composition) and David Throckmorton Quartet (groove-based improvisations). Paul and David at one time formed the core rhythm section of the Maynard Ferguson Big Band; Paul later joined the last Stanley Turrentine Quartet. Ben and David cooperatively run Space Exchange, a weekly series featuring local and international creative musicians. Ben has recorded with Anthony Braxton and organized a festival of Braxton's music. Paul teaches at Pittsburgh's High School for the Creative and Performing Arts, and is artist in residence this year at Duquesne University. Ben teaches at Carnegie Mellon University.
