This show features two groups from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music who are exploring music beyond the standard jazz and classical curriculum at school. Both groups will be performing original music.
ULTUS: Aliya Ultan and Carson Fratus first performed music together in the summer of 2016 by forming the duo, ULTUS. Both are classically trained musicians with a passion for songwriting. “Because of our unique instrumentation, we are able to create something completely new, something that is difficult to define.” -Aliya Ultan. ULTUS has an inherent complexity in their through composed style. A simple groove based feel still remains, and there is no question that any crowd can connect. They plan to release their EP, titled Moon Country, in early 2017.
Featuring:
Hatchling: Formed in Autumn of 2016, Hatchling is a trio of improvising musicians from Oberlin. Brought together by a shared love of improvised music and meditation, Hatchling has explored methods of creating music in the present moment. At the heart of Hatchling's music are simple melodies and exploration into the unknown. Each performance by Hatchling is a journey for all participants, audience included.
