The Emmet Cohen Trio: A Handful of Keys

Emmet Cohen, Piano

Russel Hall, Bass

Evan Sherman, Drums

Harlem based piano phenom, Emmet Cohen, swings through town with his all-star trio featuring Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s bassist, Russell Hall, and drummer Evan Sherman, recently on tour with both Wynton and Branford Marsalis. The trio is known for its range and uplifting dynamism, representing Cohen’s “kaleidoscopic sense of musical narrative,” as noted in Downbeat Magazine. Audience members can expect to be treated to a master class in stylistic juxtapositions, including the melding of stride, blues, church, swing, bebop, free, and contemporary styles, resulting in the innovative sound of swing’s future. The Trio will also feature selections from Cohen’s latest album release entitled the Masters Legacy Series Vol. 1 featuring Jimmy Cobb, famed Miles Davis drummer.

Emmet Cohen's exacting piano artistry has been recognized in many significant forums. He placed first in both the American Jazz Pianists competition (2014) and the Phillips Piano Competition at the University of West Florida (2011). He was a finalist in the prestigious American Pianists Association's Cole Porter Fellowship (2015, 2011) and the Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition (2011). Cohen has appeared in world-renowned jazz events, including the Monterey, Newport, and North Sea jazz festivals and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. He has also performed in Lincoln Center's Rose Hall and Washington, D.C.'s Kennedy Center, and was received in the Oval Office by President Obama. Currently living in Harlem, Cohen is Hammond B3 organist-in-residence at Smoke jazz club.

Russell Hall is a jazz double bassist, composer, educator, entertainer, and thinker. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, he currently resides in the mecca for jazz in the world, New York City. He started playing the double bass at the age of 14 when he was invited to attend Dillard Center For the Arts as apart of the jazz ensemble. While at Dillard, Russell took part in the internationally acclaimed Essentially Ellington Jazz Competition where the ensemble placed first from 2011-2012 and second place in 2010. Additionally, Russell was awarded the prize of "Most Outstanding Bassist" all three years of his participation. While in high school, he also garnered national acclaim as a member of the 2012 Jazz Band of America, the Vail Jazz Workshop, as well as being a Young Arts and Grammy Jazz Ensemble Finalist. A highlight for Hall also included a write up in Jet Magazine by jazz ambassador Wynton Marsalis as being "A Jazz Star of The Future" while at the tender age of 17. He is currently finishing a degree at the prestigious Juilliard School where he studies with master bassists Ron Carter and Ben Wolfe. Currently, Russell can be seen at some of New York's most renowned jazz venues such as Jazz At Lincoln Center, Small's, Smoke, The Blue Note, The Jazz Standard and Ginny's Supper Club with artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Joshua Redman, Jon Hendricks, Kathleen Battle, Herlin Riley, Jimmy Heath, Cyrus Chestnut,Ali Jackson, Russell Malone, Jon Batiste and Stay Human, Joey Alexander, and Harold Mabern to name a few. Russell was also apart of the EMMY nominated film "HBO: Masterclass with Wynton Marsalis" where he along with other students were coached by Marsalis and featured in a performance with the Marsalis. Russell has also been fortunate to bring the joy of jazz around the world at venues in Japan, Russia, Spain, Cape Verde, Mexico, Switzerland and the Carribean. It is Russell's mission to create music that is as equal in engagement as it is in depth and range, focusing on the many styles that have contributed to the Jazz aesthetic.
