May 21 from 4:00pm - 7:00pm
On Sunday May 21st, the Northern Ohio Youth Orchestra will present an afternoon of two concerts of chamber music and newly composed pieces as part of our 2017 edition of the NOYO Chamber Music Extension and Young Composers Program.
At 4:00pm, we will feature chamber music performances by members of our intermediate string orchestra, the Sinfonietta Strings. 6:00pm will showcase our Philharmonia Orchestra, high school musicians, and Young Composers Program.
Meeting two hours per week from April to May, students in NOYO’s Chamber Music Extension studied the art of playing in small ensembles under the guidance of Oberlin Conservatory Students. Musicians learn the intricacies involved in performing in an chamber music setting. Without a conductor to lead them, students must watch one another and take musical cues based on the shape of their colleagues musical lines. In rehearsals leading up the performance, our young musicians were able to discuss the music and come to decisions on how it will be played. This year, we have extended our chamber music experience to include our middle school string players.
In its second year, the Young Composers Program provides students with year-long composition instruction at Oberlin Conservatory under the guidance of Assistant Professor of Composition, Jessie Jones with support from Oberlin Conservatory student composers, Torrin Hallett and Alyia Ultan. Over the course of the year, students learned the fundamentals of music composition—including counterpoint, notation, and instrumentation— while writing works to be premiered by Oberlin Conservatory musicians.
Founded in 1969, the Northern Ohio Youth Orchestra is a regional orchestral training program for young musicians ages 8 to 22. NOYO students receive weekly instruction from a distinguished staff of professional musicians and perform in world class facilities at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.
