Shocked by David Bowie’s death in 2016, fans and experts are just beginning to understand the magnitude of his influence. Global celebrations continue to be held around the world, and more than a year after his passing, Bowie was awarded five Grammys (his first for his music). Bowie would’ve turned 70 years old on January 8th and on that day, his final known recording were released.
Acclaimed Bowiephile Thomas Mulready, founder and editor of the CoolCleveland newsletter and web site, has developed an entertaining and powerful multi-media presentation on Bowie’s life and legacy. Mulready developed the initial version of the presentation in 2013 for Baldwin Wallace University. He has continued to update and expand the show, and it now covers all aspects and eras of the artist’s life and passing.
“An Evening With(out) David Bowie” is painstakingly researched featuring more 100 slides containing up to 10 data points per slide, including primary and secondary research. Rare videos, photos, music and biographical data are presented in a lightening-fast pace and entertaining manner. Themes in the artist’s life are developed: sexuality/gender, schizophrenia/insanity, fear/death/apocalypse, space/alien/star, and decadence/Fin de siècle, and the show highlights the artist’s impact on a number of fields: music, theatre, film, fashion, politics, design, production, visual art, marketing and even finance.
The show is performed in two parts. Part 1 is The Early Years, from Davy Jones to the Thin White Duke. Part 2 is Mid-to Late Period: From Berlin to Blackstar ★ and Beyond.
Each presentation concludes with live music by Vanity Crash, Cleveland’s celebrated glam punk superstars. The band’s Bowie repertoire include timeless gems performed in their own high energy style, alongside their fiery originals and glam classics.
