The Workmen's Circle Klezmer Orchestra has been entertaining audiences in Northeast Ohio for years. From large theatres to small, intimate parties, the orchestra plays a blend of traditional and popular music under the direction of Norman Tischler. The Workmen's Circle Klezmer Orchestra offers a range of Klezmer, Israeli, and contemporary music in their programs with lyrics in Yiddish, Hebrew, English and other languages.
Klezmer music originated from the musical traditions of the Eastern European Ashkenazi Jewish communities. Played by itinerant musicians called Klezmorim, Klezmer originally consisted largely of dance tunes and pieces for weddings and other festive celebrations in many different culture around the world. In more recent times, many musicians and singers, like the Andrews sisters, Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, and others, recorded hits based on these old songs. Today, Klezmer music is played by contemporary groups and Klezmer music festivals are held all over the world in cities including Safed, Berlin, Paris, and London.
