Vanity Crash: Album Release Party @ BOP STOP

VANITY CRASH DIVES INTO THE RABBIT HOLE OF DREAMY SONGS ON THEIR 5th RELEASE

Cleveland’s Vanity Crash will hold a release party for their fifth album, Phantasmagoria, at the BOP STOP on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. The party will include Vanity Crash performing the five songs from the new EP, along with favorites from their previous releases. As usual, video will complement Vanity Crash’s show, with a special Skype interview with Mike Garson, David Bowie’s longtime pianist, talking about his collaboration with Vanity Crash on the new song “Angel and Me.”

In addition to the music at the BOP STOP, an Art Gallery exhibit will start at 7 p.m. to showcase the original cover art featured on Phantasmagoria, plus related art works by the artists who contributed to the album’s cover. Because visual themes are integral to the music of Phantasmagoria, Dennis Van Crash worked with notable local artists to develop a graphic-novel-like album cover. The graphic novel artists include Gary Dumm, best known for his decades-long relationship with Harvey Pekar, Jim "The Rev" Giar, Ashley Ribblett, Clare Kolat and Tim Switalski.

“The word phantasmagoria conjures up thoughts of a dream-like state, altered realities and strong visual imagery,” says Van Crash. “In a backwards sense, this theme is throughout the record. The title song is a trippy visual adventure, ‘So It Seems’ is a questioning look at our modern life, ‘Life On A Cool Curve’ reminds us that it’s empowering to be different, and ‘Emily Dickenson’ is about a one-night stand with a reclusive poet.”

“’Angel and Me’ tells the story of two somewhat lost young souls, struggling to understand how they fit in today’s world. But I always thought the song needed something to take it to another level,” says Van Crash. “So I contacted Mike Garson, and told him about the song, and he quickly agreed to work on it. I gave him some modest instruction, but also a lot of freedom. He came back with this brilliant interpretation.

Vanity Crash was born onstage in the smash Cleveland Public Theatre production of “Hedwig and The Angry Inch" about a botched sex change operation. Band front man Dennis Van Crash was the musical director of the play, which featured the beginnings of Vanity Crash as the fictional on-stage band The Angry Inch. The glam punk band was so tight and rocking, the decision was made to keep the band together and work on original material.

Ever since, Vanity Crash has been dressing up and throwing down with eye-popping synchronized light shows, outrageous stage costumes and provocative attitude, opening for the likes of the New York Dolls, Poison, the Darkness and Gogol Bordello. Their acclaimed tributes to David Bowie include timeless gems performed live alongside their own incendiary originals. The band has recently performed in productions of “An Evening With(out) David Bowie,” Dancing Wheels’ “Best of Bowie” show at Nautica, “GlamJam” at Cleveland’s Powerhouse and at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Vanity Crash 5th album release along with graphic novel artists' exhibit Sept. 23, at 7 p.m. The show is all ages.
