November 1 from 7:00pm - 9:30pm
This Fall, "Eric Seddon's Hot Club Live Performance and History Series" occurs every other Wednesday in September through November. Each event focuses on a different innovator in jazz clarinet. Feel free to purchase tickets to each individual concert or buy a ticket to the entire series for some great savings!
Our fourth concert in this series features the work of George Lewis!
George Lewis was a dock worker in New Orleans for most of his life. Though limited in technique, his singing style became a dominant global influence, particularly important for the British Trad scene, which continues to be an important center for New Orleans style. This concert will emphasize the tradition running from Johnny Dodds through Lewis to a completely different branch of the jazz clarinet. Most American mainstream jazz audiences are at least somewhat familiar with the Bechet-Noone-Goodman legacy, but fewer understand the profound global clarinet phenomenon that runs from Bechet through Johnny Dodds and George Lewis to other global Trad Jazz scenes. Join us as we explore the history of this uniquely influential figure in New Orleans jazz.
