March 4 from 2:00pm - 4:00pm
Lakeland’s jazz was founded in the mid-1970’s by Len Orcino and Bob Delly with the purpose of providing high school musicians from Northeast Ohio the opportunity to perform outstanding jazz compositions in concert with other talented area students, interested especially in the art form known as jazz.
The band was dormant for a time in the 80’s and revived by their current leader, Ed Michaels, in 1990.
The current mission of the group is to perform the most significant compositions and arrangements in the jazz library: and to give young musicians the opportunity to rehearse and perform together on a weekly basis during the school year. The band rehearses every week at Lakeland Community College, which sponsors the group.
For their Bop Stop performance, Jazz Impact will showcase compositions bases on the theme of “A Centennial Celebration of Monk, Gillespie, Dameron, and Rich – a tribute to jazz icons born in 1917”. In addition, the concert will perform the composition, ‘Maximum Impact’, a piece written for them by Lakeland music professor, Dr. Matthew Saunders in celebration of Lakeland’s 50th Anniversary.
This event is free but there is a $5 suggested donation.
