Hailed by The New York Times as "one of the greatest musicians in jazz history," GRAMMY(r) Award winning saxophone titan Joe Lovano has distinguished himself for some decades as a prescient and path finding force in the arena of creative music. One of Cleveland's favorite sons, Lovano returns home to celebrate the city's long legacy in jazz in a program entitled "Reflections & Projections." Although the live recording for NPR will take place over two nights, each evening will feature a different lineup of musicians. Tonight (12/28) Joe's band features:
With a GRAMMY(r) win for his 52nd Street Themes and 14 other nominations, Lovano has won DownBeat Magazine's Critics and Readers Polls countless times as Tenor Saxophonist, Musician of the Year, Jazz Album of the Year and Triple Crowns from DownBeat. He has also received numerous awards from JazzTimes and the Jazz Journalists Association for Tenor Saxophone, Album of the Year and Musician of the Year. Lovano was awarded an honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music and since 2001 has held the Gary Burton Chair in Jazz Performanc and is a founding faculty member of Berklee's Global Jazz Institute. He is a guest lecturer at New York University's Jazz Program, Juilliard and Manhattan School of Music as well as clinician at universities around the globe. Joe Lovano continues to explore new horizons within the world of music as a soloist, band leader and composer.
