Korean-American virtuoso violinist Maureen Choi leads her Spanish Jazz quartet, creating a unique voice that breaks pre-conceptions about Jazz, Classical, or Flamenco while pushing the boundaries of the violin.
Maureen Choi was winning international violin competitions at age 5 in South Korea, touring the world as a soloist at age 10, graduated from top Classical and Jazz schools in the USA, played with musicians from all over the world and then, she decided to move to Madrid, Spain, in 2012, where she created her own Quartet with some of the most innovative musicians there, and started composing and re-imagining sounds from the Spanish Diaspora: from Spain, to Cuba, to Latin America.
That search for her voice, breaking genre pre-conceptions, became “Ida y Vuelta” (2015), the 1st album with her current line-up: Daniel García on Piano (Spain), Mario Carrillo on Bass (Spain) and Michael Olivera on Drums (Cuba).
After 6 years playing together, more than 400 concerts all over Spain, 3 USA tours, and great reviews on specialized media like Downbeat or All About Jazz, the band has reached a level of maturity, interconnectedness, finesse and musicality that is hard to explain. Choi´s unique ability to take the audience on a deeply emotional journey through her violin is unparalleled.
All this crystallized on their latest album “Theia” which they will take on tour in 2019 through Spain, USA and Asia.
