Night at the Movies - CD Release Show
Svetlana & her New York Swing Collective Featuring:
Svetlana is a critically acclaimed New York based jazz vocalist, composer, and band leader. Svetlana has toured nationally and internationally appearing in premier national jazz venues from coast to coast (Blue Note, Regatta Bar, Yoshi's, Nighttown, and many more), has appeared on various national and international TV programs (US, UK, Israel, Russia, Germany, Japan, Brazil and more) and has been featured in numerous news and music publications (Huffington Post, All About Jazz, JazzWeek, Wall Street Journal, PopWrapped, TimeOut, and more).
As a child growing up in the Soviet Russia, Svetlana often found solace from the grim aspects of the regimented Soviet reality inside Moscow’s movie theaters, where life seemed so much more magical. She has carried this love for the moving pictures throughout her life, and wanted to make a record that would bridge the visual and sonic expressions of the genre. The resulting record, Night at the Movies, is a fourteen-track collection of film music that spans a century of cinema. It is also a love letter to dreaming — both the night and its mysteries, as well as reflecting the yearning for something more, escaping from unwanted realities through imagination and optimism, and persevering despite all odds.
Night at the Movies takes listeners on a dynamic musical journey that ranges from the French New Wave and Soviet Cinema, to modern day Academy Award-winners, and animated classics - presented by an ensemble of exciting New York jazz stars. Film and music both express a fleeting beauty. Night at the Movies reflects these moments of joy and passion, sharp humor and reflection, and most of all, fantasy - the record release concert will transport the audience to the carnival of sound, seamlessly moving from sophisticated retrospection to a rowdy "exuberant, foot-stomping music combining swing and pop-singer/songwriter sensibilities!"
