How does a person go from being a professor of Slavic linguistics, to an award-winning author, to a bassist/keyboardist/songwriter? Afi Scruggs doesn’t know. She just knows she’s doing it - simply by doing what she “do.”

What she “do” is play and write, both words and music. She’s played blues and bluegrass; gospel and jazz. She composes trap and hip hop beats that have helped students write award-winning songs against bigotry and hatred. She has mixed journalism and music by composing a song for Chicago Public Media’s “Race: Out Loud” project.

She’s one of several female bassists here in Cleveland. Afi has laid down the low end for some of the city’s finest musicians: blues harpist Wallace Coleman; guitarist Michael J Calhoun, founding member of the Grammy-winning Dazz Band; as well as guitarists Charlie Christopherson and Butch Armstrong. She played with the Jarred Goldweber and the Park Brothers blues band as the opening band for national blues guitarist Samantha Fish. Her single “Love Walked Out” has been featured on 107.3 The Wave, and on the Internet and college radio.

“Electric Eclectic Afi” will feature covers and originals from her musical life. At 65, she’s thrilled to share her creative maturity in the name of a great time.
