ABOUT ALIA MUSICA

Alia Musica Pittsburgh is dedicated to quality performances of challenging repertory of contemporary music in all genres, focusing on living composers as well as major figures of the 20th century. The ensemble works in the belief that concert music is a manifestation of its time and place, and that it can and should regain the relevance it once had on the society and the audiencesthat give rise to it. The organization behind the biennial Pittsburgh Festival of New Music, Alia Musica land-mark events include performances of Ken Ueno’s concerto for overtone singer and orchestra, Berio’s iconic cantata Laborintus II with Quince Ensemble, a flashmob of Stravinsky’s Firebird, and Surround, a piece for six harps placed around the audience.

As a chamber ensemble, Alia Musica has performed toured six states and appeared internationally as guest ensemble at the 2015 MusicArte Festival in Panama City. Its repertory combines monuments of modern music, from Ives and Varèse to Berio and Haas, with the freshest music by living composers. Among its premieres are works by composers of the stature of Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon, Ken Ueno, Marilyn Shrude, and Erin Rogers, and the ensemble has shared stages with legendary artists like Cliff Colnot, Robert Dick, Tony Arnold.

PROGRAM

  • Frammenti di recitativo (2013) — John Arrigo-Nelson
  • Memoria (2015) — Federico Garcia-de Castro
  • Within the Wall (2018) — Marilyn Shrude
  • Enchanted Days (2010) — Kerrith Livengood
  • “A poison Tree” (from Three Bills, 2016) — James Ogburn

This program combines Alia Musica's most recent repertory—including our 2018 commission from the esteemed Marilyn Shrude, and Federico Garcia-De Castro's powerful Memoria, based on the last words of Bernardo Jaramillo, assassinated for his views in Colombia in 1990—with older gems that the ensemble is bringing back in 2019-20. Kerrith Livengood's haunting Enchanted Days
