------------
It’s gonna be all about a party when Afi ‘n the Mix celebrates the birthday of our keyboardist, Kerry Holland aka “Kerry Joe.”. He’s one year shy of 60, so join us for a set that closes the door on his youth (just kidding). The event marks another milestone: Kerry’s first solo concert.
Kerry is a legend in the Cleveland music community. He’s best known as the keyboard player with the iconic Spirit Plus Show Band. Kerry was also the long-time keyboard player with Odyssey & Company, and has performed for productions at Karamu House, as well as for Dayton Contemporary Dance Company. He is presently the minister of music at New Life At Calvary.
Kerry's career spans his lifetime. He was born in Alabama, and moved to Cleveland as a young child. He started playing when he was just 8 years old. His mom bought a portable organ for his sister, but Kerry started picking out songs himself. While still a youngster, he joined The Haymon Singers, a child gospel group led by his neighbor’s family. For several years, they traveled from church to church, in and out of Cleveland.
At his birthday, Kerry will bring his soulful style to a wide range of music: jazz, soul, blues, rhythm and blues, and RnB. His backing band includes Afi Scruggs on bass, Jeff Johnson on guitar, and Carlos Kincaid on drums. Denardo “Baby Bro’” Askew will be a special guest vocalist.
