“Lift Their Voices” (LTV) is a community program to expand awareness of the artistic and societal innovations made by historical figures from marginalized communities whose contributions are too often underappreciated. Their stories will be shared in classrooms, on podcasts, and through live stream concert performances. Examples of historically marginalized figures include African American inventor, Garrett Morgan, who invented the traffic light and gas mask, and the Kalamazoo Gals who built the sought-after Banner guitars behind the scene during World War two.

In partnership with Cleveland Montessori School and the Music Settlement’s nationally recognized award-winning Bop Stop venue, LTV will engage ROAM teaching artists and local performers to tell the stories of Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and LGBTQIA+ innovators including adults with disabilities. Performers will discuss the challenges faced and contributions made by selected historic innovators and discuss how access, racial, and social justice challenges have influenced their artistic development.

“Lift Their Voices” kicks off on November 17, 2021, at BOP STOP with a concert by the duo of Morgan Mecaskey and Liz Bullock. Morgan Mecaskey is an American musician, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist living in Cleveland, OH. Mecaskey’s music is a head and heart experience for the listener; earnest lyrics delve into metaphysical questions while vivid soundscapes, whimsical motifs, and fat beats build bold and beguiling music. Joining Mecaskey will be singer-songwriter, Liz Bullock. Liz MT-BC is a Board Certified Music Therapist with University hospitals, and an active freelance singer in the Cleveland area. Liz was a central part of the music performance and podcast, ‘Searching for the Truth” which showcased Sojourner Truth’s Ain’t I a Woman’s speech in 1851.
