Performer composer Caleb A. Smith is a multi-faceted artist who hopes to use his art to present relevant, relatable, and thought-provoking narratives to his audience via a visually and sonically immersive artistic experience. Caleb received his Bachelor’s in Jazz Performance from Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where he was able to attend on a full-tuition scholarship and just recently graduated from Boston’s New England Conservatory of Music with a Masters degree in Jazz Performance. He has been fortunate enough to study with musicians such as trombonist Robin Eubanks, as well as with performer composers Jason Moran, Vijay Iyer, Andrew Cyrille, Billy Hart, and Gary Bartz.
As a performer, Caleb has played with a vast selection of artists including five-time Grammy Award winning American visionary Lauryn Hill at the 2018 Rock N Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony presented by HBO, a performance with trumpeters Terrance Blanchard and Dominick Farinacci as part of Cleveland’s Annual Tri-C Jazz Festival, the at the historic Karamu House for productions of Langston Hughes’ Black Nativity. A regular performer within the local Cleveland scene, Caleb has also played in an array of different musical settings including small jazz ensembles, big bands, church groups, wedding bands, and pop groups around the northern Ohio area. Most recently, Caleb performed at the 2022 Annual Tri-C Jazz Festival with the Tri-C Jazz Fest All-Star Big Band led by bassist and composer John Clayton. While performing in this group, Caleb got the chance to play alongside luminaries such as Cleveland native trumpeters Sean Jones and Dominick Farinacci, bassist Rodney Whitaker, and saxophonist Dick Oatts.
In November of 2022, Caleb embarked on his first international tour with the Cleveland based group Mourning [A] BLKstar. They performed throughout Europe in The Netherlands, Germany, and Italy. During this tour the group performed at three major festivals (Le Guess Who?, Crossing Borders, and Cosmic Awakening at HWK) and performed/recorded an album with acclaimed musician and visual artist Lonnie Holley.
