An engaging concert showcasing a selection of outstanding composers from Latin America, performed by four talented Cleveland musicians.

The Music Settlement will present a concert at Heights Arts on Monday, April 3, 2023.

This concert brings a new repertoire showcasing a selection of outstanding composers from Latin America. The performance opens with Cuban American composer Paquito D'Rivera's Wapango with it soaring melodies and intricate rhythms. You will also hear a work by Juan Bautista Plaza that is inspired by the Venezuelan dance Joropo encased in a European form like the fugue. The concert will also feature the music of Mexican vanguardist Silvestre Revueltas, full of irreverence and humor in a very distinct style. The penultimate piece is by Emiliano Pardo-Tristán featuaring rhythms of his native Panama with a modern twist. The concert will close with Jamaican-British composer Eleanor Alberga and her quartet No 1. Written in 1993 this quartet will take you on a wild ride with its intricate web of rhythms, extreme sonorities and driving spirit. Don't miss this opportunity to hear new music here in Cleveland!

More About The Performers:

Lisa Boyko joined The Cleveland Orchestra in 1991, after serving as a member of the New Orleans Symphony, Toronto Symphony, and the Minnesota Orchestra. Born in Cleveland and raised in Tucson, Arizona, Ms. Boyko studied for two years in Vienna at the Musikgymnasium and the Hochschule für Musik. In 1985, she received a Bachelor of Music degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM), where she was a student of Robert Vernon. Ms. Boyko appeared as alumni soloist with the Cleveland Institute of Music Chamber Orchestra in the Cleveland premiere of Darius Milhaud’s Concertino d’été and continues to perform regularly in solo recitals and chamber music concerts. She serves on the faculty at CIM and Case Western Reserve University and has taught at the Encore School for Strings and the MasterWorks Festival. Ms. Boyko is a founding member of the Cleveland Chamber Collective, and is active in local organizations that support and promote music and arts education. She has held board positions with the CIM Alumni Association, the Ohio Viola Society, and Inlet Dance Theatre. In her spare time, she is an avid gardener who also enjoys reading and traveling.

Kathleen Collins joined the second violin section of The Cleveland Orchestra in 1995, the same year she earned a master of music degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music. Ms. Collins holds a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University where she was also awarded the Performer's Certificate. Her teachers have included Paul Biss, James Buswell, Bernhard Goldschmidt, and Rosemary Maloscay. Before joining The Cleveland Orchestra, Ms. Collins was a member of the Hong Kong Philharmonic and the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Ms. Collins attended Interlochen Arts Academy, where she won the Young Artist Award. Ms. Collins enjoys participating in the Learning Through Music and Music Mentor education programs of The Cleveland Orchestra. Raised in a musical family, with a mother who was a violin teacher, she is married to Jonathan Fields, a former professional trumpet player. Kathleen is a resident of Cleveland Heights.

Yun-Ting Lee joined the second violin section of The Cleveland Orchestra in April 2013. He graduated with bachelor and master degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he was a recipient of the Bennett Levine Memorial Award in Chamber Music. His principal teachers were William Preucil, David Updegraff, Phyllis Skoldberg, and David Cerone. Mr. Lee has performed as soloist with the Cleveland Institute of Music, Music Academy of the West, National Repertory, Phoenix Symphony, and Spoleto Festival USA orchestras. He has participated in New York String Orchestra Seminar, International Holland Music Sessions, and Pacific Music Festival.

Daniel Pereira, from Caracas, Venezuela, enjoys a multifaceted and versatile career as a cello teacher, chamber music coach, orchestral performer and chamber musician. Since 2005, he has been a member of the cello section of the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra. He performs regularly with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra and Wheeling Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed with the Pittsburgh Symphony and New World Symphony. From 2006 - 2017, Pereira served as a regular substitute with The Cleveland Orchestra. During that period he was able to work under some of the world’s leading conductors including Franz Welzer-Möst, Herbert Blomstedt, Alan Gilbert, Vladimir Ashkenazy and Stéphane Denève, among others, and travel throughout the United States and Europe.
