Jackie Warren and Joshua Smith's musical connection spans more than 2.5 decades, when back to when a teenage Josh would hire his elder jazz sibling Jackie on gigs around Cleveland, and in recent years they have carved out a new chapter in their musical kinship, creating some very compelling jazz even in the paired down setting of saxophone and piano duo.
Residing in New Orleans, saxophonist Joshua Smith is a Cleveland Native and part of the avant power trio Birth. He grew up playing straight ahead jazz in Cleveland, Ohio. One of his early musical collaborators and mentors as a young teen playing gigs in Cleveland was a generation older, the young, incredible pianist Jackie Warren.
Both of these formidable jazz players have created a long lasting musical presence in Northeast Ohio and beyond. Jackie is Cleveland’s premiere jazz pianist. Joshua has made his mark in a musical world somewhere between straight ahead and experimental jazz.
Joshua and Jackie have performed together at Nighttown, The Bop Stop, Blue Jazz, Trinity Cathedral and countless restaurants and local venues.Together, they speak a language that is effortlessly creative, telepathic, and rooted in the tradition of modern jazz. On their new record, The Bee’s Knees, this duo takes a creative approach to jazz standards, playing superb renditions of songs from the great American songbook, and a few from the jazz composition lexicon, as well some melodically potent free improvisations. The results are a stunning, unique and ultra-listenable album fit for deep listening and mellow accompaniment. The duo performs classic songs with spontaneity, interwoven improvisations, and an unpredictably creative approach that brings something truly new to this well travelled form of jazz standards.
