Jazz pianist and composer, David Janeway, grew up in Detroit in the early sixties and was heavily influenced by Motown and local jazz musicians such as Marcus Belgrave and Harold McKinney before moving to New York City in 1978. Janeway studied with the late Albert Dailey and performed with many Latin-Jazz and mainstream jazz artists during this period including The Supremes, Art Farmer, Angel Canales and Sabor, Michal Urbaniak, Jr. Cook, Sonny Fortune, Tom Harrell, Valery Ponomarev, Roseanna Vitro, Pete Yellin, Dakota Staton, Eliot Zigmund and many others.
Janeway has performed extensively in the NYC club scene from the late 70s to the present both as a leader and sideman at Smalls, Mezzrow, Zinc Bar, Sweet Basil, Birdland, Visiones, Zanzibar, Jazz Forum, Deer Head Inn and Maureen’s Jazz Cellar as well as the Detroit Jazz Festival, Madison Square Garden for the 1980 Salsa Festival, the Village Gate for the Salsa Meets Jazz series and other clubs and venues throughout the US and Europe.
His latest CD, Distant Voices (Steeplechase SCCD 33145), featuring his working trio with Billy Hart, received wide acclaim. His second trio recording, “Forward Motion” with Billy Hart and Cameron Brown will be released in September also on Steeplechase.
“I’m excited to be reuniting with Bob Hurst for this special trio performance. Bob and I first worked together way back in the 70s in Detroit and then later with a variety of bands in NYC during the 80s.”

“Janeway’s playing is lyrical and spacious with classical charms. He is strong on ideas and delivery.”
-George Harris, Jazz Weekly
“It is no small feat to say that not only is Janeway’s playing sparkling but so is his ability to write tuneful compositions.”
-Michael P. Gladstone, All About Jazz
“David Janeway is an extra ordinary pianist with great facility and wealth of ideas. He exhibits maturity and depth in his playing. He has most definitely, “ARRIVED”.
-Eddie Henderson
