Rick Zelinsky, a multifaceted saxophonist/woodwind artist based in Anchorage, Alaska meets prolific Cleveland-based saxophonist and composer, Howie Smith, for a night of electronic exploration and spontaneous creativity. Tickets to this show are $20 each.

The Alaska Electronic Orchestra is the latest project of Rick Zelinsky, a multifaceted artist and educator based in Anchorage, Alaska, recognized for his work as a saxophone/woodwind artist in jazz, classical and electronic genres. The AEO integrates acoustic, electronic and nature field recordings inspired through jazz, classic, and ambient genres. Robert Sewell (host of “Take Five,” a long-running jazz show on Public Radio, Juneau) describes the AEO as “jazz meets fusion meets house meets Brian Eno.”
Rick Zelinsky teaches band in the Anchorage School District and saxophone at the University of Alaska, Anchorage, and has degrees in saxophone performance at Cleveland State University studying with Howie Smith, Masters in saxophone performance at the University of Akron, and Electronic Sound Design and Production Masters certificate at Berklee School of Music. He is a Yamaha Saxophone Artist, and a Rasmuson Foundation Artist Fellowship supported the work on his 5th album, “Strange Mountains,” which led to a 6th, “Earth Soundz,” in 2023. www.IcyGrooves.com

Howie Smith has presented concerts and workshops throughout the United States, Canada, South America, Europe and Australia, and has worked with musicians, composers and ensembles as varied as Anthony Braxton, Gary Burton, Dizzy Gillespie, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Elvis Presley, Pauline Oliveros, the Cleveland Orchestra and the Tone Road Ramblers. His recorded performances are equally diverse and his catalogue of compositions includes works for conventional big bands and combos; for string, wind and percussion ensembles; for electronics; and for mixed media. Smith is a professor emeritus at Cleveland State University, where he was the coordinator of jazz studies from 1979 to 2006 and served as chair of the Art Department from 2003 to 2007. He has been associated with Yamaha as an artist/clinician since 1971.
