Awarded the prestigious Jazz Journalist Association’s “JAZZ HERO” award for the city of Bloomington in 2015, Monika also won the Down Beat Magazine Award, Best Original Song (1994) and has received grants from the NEA, the Indiana Arts Commission and MEIEA, among others. As a Doctor of Music Education at Indiana University, she serves as a Senior Lecturer in Arts Management and has also authored two critically praised books, Dr. David Baker – A Legacy in Music, foreword by Quincy Jones (IU Press 2011) and Experiencing Chick Corea – A Listener’s Companion (Rowman & Littlefield 2017), praised by Wolfgang Knauer at Jazzinstitut Darmstadt, “Herzig manages a perfect balance of musical analysis and context for the chosen recordings as well as Chick Corea’s career…easy to read, well-organized and motivates – which is still the highest achievement for music literature – for repeated listening.”

Back in 2014, Herzig’s idea was to bring together fellow women jazz musicians with the goal of presenting powerful role models on stage as a way of breaking some lingering stereotypes; a path initially paved by Sherri Maricle and the DIVA Jazz Orchestra in the ‘90s. That groups like Artemis and similar initiatives have since followed the trail that Sheroes helped blaze is proof their efforts have paid off.

The various Sheroes ensembles over time represent an extended family of bandleaders in their own right. All In Good Time is their latest step in their ongoing mission to elevate some of these iconic composers and players. “It was great having fellow bandleaders because they understand the challenges of leading projects and can provide moral support and sometimes share resources,” said Herzig of her fellow Sheroes bandmates. “We also have an understanding that we face similar challenges, and it helps to have a community where you can talk and work towards similar goals.”

On All In Good Time, Herzig is once again joined by Sheroes charter members Jamie Baum on flute, Reut Regev on trombone and Leni Stern on guitar. Drummer Rosa Avila returns from her appearances on 2018’s Sheroes and 2020’s Eternal Dance, while newcomers Camille Thurman on tenor sax and vocals (a former member of the DIVA Jazz Orchestra and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra) and bassist-composer Gina Schwarz fill out this current potent lineup.Together their chemistry is undeniable, as they skillfully navigate the challenging originals by Herzig and Schwarz — and one surprising cover — while delivering impassioned improvisations along the way.

Monika Herzig’s Sheroes is an amazing listening experience, brimming with passion for the performance, and highly recommended. While the panelists did not speak entirely in the past tense regarding gender bias in jazz, many acknowledged ways in which the jazz world has become more welcoming to women in recent years. At some point during the charged set, all questions about gender and jazz faded into the background.
The main takeaway: These musicians just play good. Real good. DB

“The jazz supergroup of the year is right here – SHEROES!”
– HOWARD MANDEL, Author/President of JJA

“…Herzig herself is a visionary artist and educator, a true jazz warrior with an already fascinating career.”
– BOB BLUMENTHAL, Award Winning Journalist

“Each song is engaging, the playing accomplished and inspiring.”
– JAZZIZ

“SHEROES is a brilliant project involving some of my favorite musicians, spearheaded by Monika Herzig. It is soulful and thoughtful. I especially love their take on “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”- it captures the spirit of the group because there is no stopping great artists from making great music, as demonstrated on this stellar recording.
– TERRI LYNE CARRINGTON
