------------
Cortex is a spirited combo, active since 2007, that plays energetic jazz of the finest brand. The members of this critically acclaimed quartet are amongst the most sought after young jazz performers on the Norwegian jazz scene today. They all have also marked their position in several other constellations such as: Bushman’s Revenge, Puma, PNL Large Unit, SAKA, All Included, Zanussi 5, Friends & Neighbors, Honest John, and The Heat Death. Peter Margasak of the Chicago Reader has written, “No Scandinavian group since Atomic has so powerfully addressed and remade the free jazz of the 60s like Cortex. In a country whose creative music scene is celebrated for its bold hybrids of disparate sounds, Cortex goes another way.”
For this special tour the quartet will be joined by Norwegian guitar experimentalists and eclecticist Hedvig Mollestad known from Hedvig Mollestad trio and her collaborations with musicians like Nels Cline and Colin Stetson. Downbeat Magazine cited recently Mollestad as one of the artists who could shape jazz for decades.
Cortex has done extensive touring in Norway, Sweden, Germany, Czech Republic, Belgium, France, Italy, Slovenia, Portugal USA and Japan, and their records has been bestowed with praise from international critics:
”No Scandinavian group since Atomic has so powerfully addressed and remade the free jazz of the 60s like Cortex. In a country whose creative music scene is celebrated for its bold hybrids of disparate sounds, Cortex goes another way, embracing tradition in its own unique way, with a personality sketched out by the strength of Johansson’s indelible themes and four distinctive improvisational voices.”
- Peter Margasak, Chicago Reader
“You want genre labels, call it avant garde party music.”
