Bassist and composer Eli Leder leads an emerging trio on the Cleveland jazz scene. Eli met pianist Liam Speaks and drummer Stix Baker through the Tri-C JazzFest Academy precollege program, and they have all been both friends and collaborators ever since. Throughout high school, they consistently performed across the greater Cleveland/Akron area in different bands and projects. Notably, they were also part of a show-stopping presentation of young talent at Dizzy’s Club in New York City by Dominick Farinacci’s Spirit of the Groove in May of 2022.

Eli Leder is a bassist and composer from the west side of Cleveland. He currently studies Jazz Bass Performance at William Paterson University, 20 miles outside New York City. Eli treats music as exploratory, searching for new sounds and considering all genres. You may catch him playing Baroque string music, bluegrass, 2010s pop, and straight-ahead swing all in one weekend. He synthesizes all of his experiences into both his bass playing and writing.

Liam Speaks is a multi-instrumentalist and self-taught producer/composer from Ohio. He has honed in on his jazz piano skills from a very young age, eventually becoming a part of Spirit of the Groove. He currently studies Contemporary Music and Digital Instruments at Ohio University. Apart from his jazz piano playing, Speaks composes and produces original alternative music under the name Voxglove.

Nehemiah “Stix” Baker is a drummer, bandleader, and composer hailing from Cleveland’s East Side. While attending Cleveland’s School of the Arts, he has taken his skills to an unforeseen level through his dedication not only to the music but to the scene and community surrounding it. Stix’s gospel-influenced approach to supporting a band feeds this group’s energy, while still providing an unmistakable groove stemming from his own spontaneous decisions. With Baker on the kit, you never know where the music may take you.
