Besides the joy of experiencing young musicians willing to take chances playing America’s classical music doing their usual assortment of great jazz repertoire and original student compositions, this will be a celebration of Director David Kay’s retirement at U.S. after 37 years of teaching there (47 total in his career, including Indiana University and 31 summers at the Interlochen Arts Camp). In its history U.S. Jazz groups have played at and for many noteworthy area venues and organizations, participated in TriC JazzFest educational events, hosted numerous guest soloists and clinicians such as Bobby Watson, Joe Lovano, Jamey Aebersold and Sam Morrison, gave rise to players who went on to be significant musicians in their own right such as (but not limited to) Vikram Shankar, Jack Stratton, Tony Bellamy, Manuel Weyand and Chad Komocki, and participated in Ohio Music Educator Association conferences, both as individuals and as a group. Kay has played with Aretha Franklin, the Temptations and nearly 50 other internationally noted musicians, almost 50 pit orchestras, the area’s Jazz Heritage Orchestra for over 20 years, local groups such as The George Martins and Shout, was the original lead alto sax for the Mojo Generations Big Band and was on an album receiving 3 ½ stars in Down Beat with players such as Robert Hurst, Jim Beard and Shawn Pelton.
Please make a point come on down to hear what young jazz players in the Cleveland area are doing these days!
