Rising star vocalist and recent Oberlin graduate, Aanya Sengupta makes a final appearance at BOP STOP (her venue debut as a leader) before leaving NE Ohio for graduate school at Julliard! Aanya was recently awarded second place in the prestigious Ella Fitzgerald Jazz Vocal Competition. Tickets for tonight are $15 each in advance, $20 day of show.

Aanya Sengupta is a vocalist and music educator. She is a two-time recipient of DownBeat Student Awards in performance. Born and raised in in New Delhi, India, Aanya began her studies with Sentirenla Lucia (voice), Aman Mahajan (piano), and Somnath Halder (piano and theory; a student of the late Dr. Barry Harris). She moved to the U.S. in 2021 upon accepting a full tuition scholarship offer to attend the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where she studied privately with trumpeter Dr. Eddie Henderson, saxophonist Gary Bartz, bassist Gerald Cannon, and vocalist La Tanya Hall. She has also been a student of Dan Wall, Justin Robinson, and Paul Samuels. She was awarded the vocalist chair in the 2024-2025 Oberlin Sonny Rollins Jazz Ensemble, a group endowed by saxophonist Sonny Rollins that consists of outstanding Oberlin jazz students. Aanya has been part of the Women in Jazz Organization’s Mentors program and has performed at venues such as Dizzy’s Club and The Bop Stop. She graduated from Oberlin in 2025 as a recipient of the Louis and Marguerite Bloomberg Greenwood Prize, the Pi Kappa Lambda Prize for Musicianship and the Wendell and Bettye Logan Prize in Jazz Studies. She will continue her studies this fall at The Juilliard School, pursuing a master’s degree in Jazz Voice.
