Alan Hsiao has found many different hats to wear over the years. Be it as a composer, songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist, or educator, Alan always has a way of adding his own unique flavor to what he does.
Starting on trombone at the age of 10 in middle New Jersey, Alan quickly fell in love with the world of jazz music and composition. He attended Berklee College of Music (B.M. 2018) and Frost School of Music (M.M. 2020) studying jazz composition under full scholarship. Comfortable writing anything from chamber ensemble to full orchestra, composition was always Alan’s first love.
However as Alan grew older, along the way the world started opening up to him. Alan fell in love with all kinds of music: musical theater, hip hop, singer-songwriter, pop, country…you name it! Around 2018, Alan started writing new original songs somewhere in the middle of all these influences.
In 2019 Alan released his first 5-track EP little songs, a focused culmination of this new-found direction. Supported by his musical peers in the Miami scene, this first EP captures a cute, quiet, chamber-jazz oriented sound, while balancing with elements of melodic and formal pop-appeal. Although this project came from a deeply personal place, it ended up reaching an audience around the world. Three tracks from the EP were placed on Spotify’s Jazz Pop Editorial Playlist, garnering several million listens over the years and holding the spot of Alan’s most popular commercial release to date.
Alan has put out a plethora of releases since then, more songs - EP, 2020, little songs: If I Was the President - EP, 2021, My First Album - LP, 2022, little songs: Pepi & Shen - EP, 2023, and various singles along the way. Each project covers new territory while still calling back to the ‘uniquely-Alan’ sound. “I Don’t Know Anything” from Alan’s 2021 EP was also placed on Spotify’s Vocal Jazz Editorial Playlist upon release.
Alan’s latest release Apple Cider (EP, 2025) marked a new direction for Alan, embracing the sounds of 70’s soul and fusion. More recently, the title track “Apple Cider” was selected as a Tidal Spotlight Program winner, earning a placement on their Vocal Jazz Editorial Playlist.
Having leaned more heavily into the life of a recording artist over the years, Alan is excited to make his big live debut, bringing all of his music of the last several years to the Bop Stop stage!
