Sarah Hanahan is a dynamic, soulful alto saxophonist, composer, and bandleader whose
powerful sound has established her as one of the compelling voices in contemporary jazz. A
graduate of the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz and The Juilliard School, Hanahan blends
deep-rooted swing and bebop traditions with a bold, modern intensity, bringing a commanding
tone, melodic imagination, and distinctive voice to every performance.

Hanahan has performed and toured with artists including Jeff “Tain” Watts, Dee Dee
Bridgewater, Nicholas Payton, Peter Washington, and Joe Farnsworth, and has appeared at
leading venues including Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club, Smalls Jazz Club, Birdland,
Smoke Jazz & Supper Club, and the Kennedy Center. She is also a regular member of the
Mingus Big Band and leads her own quartet on stages throughout the United States around the
world.

Her critically acclaimed debut album, Among Giants, released on Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Blue
Engine Records in 2024, features Marc Cary, Nat Reeves, and Jeff “Tain” Watts. The album
received a five-star review from DownBeat and was named among the magazine’s Best Albums
of 2024, while NPR selected it as an Essential Jazz Discovery of the year.

In 2025, Hanahan was named #1 Rising Star Alto Saxophonist in the DownBeat Critics Poll and
ranked #9 overall Alto Saxophonist in the DownBeat Readers Poll, placing her alongside
established figures including Kenny Garrett and Gary Bartz. She continues to build an
international career as a bandleader and collaborator, bringing a deep connection to the jazz
tradition together with a distinctly personal and forward-looking voice.
