Playing the piano is a foundational skill that is highly recommended for those looking to pursue advanced musical training. If your teen is passionate about music, considering a career, or wants to step up their game, this is the place to start!
In collaboration with Piano Cleveland, this new ten-week course will teach students the basics of keyboard technique while increasing their skills in notation, theory, and musical creativity. Topics will include finger technique, reading notation on the grand staff, crossover fingering, scales, and key signatures.
This course is recommended for students who are have some familiarity with music and able to read at least some music on the grand staff. The curriculum does pick up rather quickly, so foundational experience will be beneficial.
Students who do not have access to a piano or keyboard are able to borrow a digital keyboard for free from Piano Cleveland to use while enrolled in this course.

Joseph Mook is a private music teacher in the greater Cleveland area, teaching children, teens, and adults, piano, violin, trumpet, and other musical instruments, as well as to love and enjoy music. He additionally is the worship team leader at his church, Gateway Church Downtown, where he plays keyboard, directs the church band in rehearsals, and leads the congregation in worship on Sundays.
Joseph has played violin in several community orchestras, most recently with Symphony West Orchestra. He occasionally performs for gigs at weddings and accompanies other musicians on piano. Joseph also has been enjoying being the keyboardist for a local rock cover band, Hero II, which performs mostly rock from the 70s-today in smaller venues around town. He's picked up many different performance styles and music tech knowledge just from his short time with Hero II.
Additionally, Joseph has been asked by the Ohio Federation of Music Clubs (OFMC) to help adjudicate solo piano entries for their Junior Music Festivals since 2020, giving students honest feedback and insight in how they performed and how to grow as musicians.
He gained his Bachelor’s of Music Education from The Ohio State University in 2012, cum laude and with Honors, where he studied his principal instrument of piano under Dr. Steven Glaser primarily, but also with Drs. Rina Shimizu-Grow and Ryan Behan. During his free time, he enjoys basking in the cultural opportunities of University Circle in Cleveland, and especially hearing a pitch-perfect concert by the world-renowned Cleveland Orchestra.
