TMS is a unique, legacy arts and culture organization – one of only a few that exists in Cleveland’s east and west sides – serving individuals of all ages.
Founded in 1912, our purpose was to provide music lessons to children and adults, many of whom were first generation immigrants, to help them become contributing citizens of their new country. Realizing that music could also impact the educational and health needs of the people of Greater Cleveland, we later added two divisions. The Center for Early Childhood (1955) develops school readiness skills by immersing young children in the arts and helps them learn the basic elements of music. The Center for Music Therapy (1966) uses music as an intervention tool to address developmental, cognitive, physical, social-emotional, and health issues for people with special needs. We offer private and group lessons, classes, and therapy sessions at our University Circle and Ohio City locations.
The Music Settlement settled in our University Circle home in 1939. The campus consists of five buildings covering more than 56,000 square feet.
TMS expanded in 2018 with the construction of a second campus in Cleveland's near west side Ohio City neighborhood.
